Major vs Minor Arcana: The Two Languages of the Tarot Deck
The 78 tarot cards split into 22 Major Arcana (life’s big themes) and 56 Minor Arcana (everyday situations). Learn how to tell them apart and why the difference matters in a reading.
A standard tarot deck has 78 cards, and they speak two different languages. The 22 Major Arcana describe life’s large archetypal themes — beginnings, endings, transformation, choice. The 56 Minor Arcana describe the texture of daily life: conversations, conflicts, small wins, work, money, and moods.
The Major Arcana: 22 archetypes
Numbered 0 (The Fool) through XXI (The World), the Major Arcana read as a journey — often called the Fool’s Journey — from innocence through trials to integration. Cards like The Tower, Death, and The Star mark turning points rather than events. When several Majors appear in one reading, the theme of the situation outweighs its details.
The Minor Arcana: four suits of everyday life
- Wands — fire: drive, ambition, creative energy.
- Cups — water: emotion, relationships, intuition.
- Swords — air: thought, communication, conflict, decisions.
- Pentacles — earth: work, money, health, the material world.
Each suit runs Ace through Ten plus four court cards (Page, Knight, Queen, King). Numbers show a development arc — Aces are seeds, Tens are completions — while court cards often read as people, roles, or approaches.
How the split changes a reading
A spread heavy in Major Arcana says: this period is formative, pay attention to the lesson. A spread heavy in Minor Arcana says: this is manageable and situational — adjust tactics, not life philosophy. Readers also watch which suits dominate: a question about love answered mostly in Swords points at communication problems, not chemistry problems.
Majors tell you what life is teaching. Minors tell you what to do on Tuesday.
